Why Does Evaporator Coil Freeze In Summer?

Home owners often complain of freezing evaporator coils in summer. The evaporator coil of an AC freezes due to various reasons. Read on to know them-

• The hot air of the room that is sucked in through the ducts is passed through a filter before sending it to the evaporator coil. If the filters of the air conditioner are jammed then partial quantity of air will reach the evaporator. As a result the cool refrigerant will not get enough heat from the air to become hot and vaporized. This will lead to cooling of the coil and gradually ice will build up on them.

• The other reason could be that the air conditioner is trying to push more cold air through the condenser than it can handle. This cause frost build up on the system. The cooling process will slow down a result. The frozen water inside can cause many damages to the system.

• A low level of refrigerant in the air conditioner will also cause the evaporator coil to freeze. Low level of refrigerant is generally cause by leakage in the system.
